Today's Objective: To examine Lars Eighner's use of language to achieve his purpose in "On Dumpster Diving."

Previous Homework:

  • Read the essay "On Dumpster Diving" by Lars Eighner.
  • Be sure to annotate as you read, either on your print copy on using WebNotes. Look for Eighner's overall purpose and the rhetorical strategies he uses to achieve this.

Bell Ringer:

Spend 10 minutes preparing your notes handout for a Socratic Circle on "On Dumpster Diving."

Student Discussion:

  • Break into circle groups for Socratic Circles. Appoint discussion director for each group.
  • Each group discusses in the inside circle for five (5) minutes, using the online timer. Remember to take notes on the inside circle's discussion when you are in the outside circle (since you aren't allowed to TALK!)
  • When circles have concluded, discuss impressions as a class.
